We are seeking an inspiring and committed Head of Year 7 who will also teach both KS2 and 3 English at our dynamic middle school. This is a fantastic maternity or secondment opportunity for someone passionate about pastoral care and academic success. If you are driven to support young learners as they transition through this critical stage of education, we would love to hear from you!
Chantry is a large middle school with over 550 students from Years 5 to 8, situated in the town of Morpeth in Northumberland. We pride ourselves on being a fully inclusive school with aspirational standards. Our purpose is to provide experiences to inspire, motivate and meet the needs of all learners. We encourage a lifelong love of learning to enable all to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge to become confident communicators and responsible citizens.
The school is part of the Cheviot Trust. Whilst the schools within the Trust are separate with their own unique identity, there is one engaged and supportive Board of Trustees, to whom each school reports.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the pastoral care for Year 7 students
- Foster a positive, inclusive school culture that ensures all Year 7 students feel supported and motivated to succeed
- Teach engaging and high-quality English lessons across Key Stages 2 and 3, promoting a love of English
- Monitor and track student progress, behaviour, and well-being
- Collaborate with parents, carers, and colleagues to build strong relationships and provide holistic support for students
- Organise and lead events, trips, assemblies, and other enrichment activities
- Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team and other Heads of Year to contribute to the school’s overall ethos and success
What we’re looking for:
- Qualified teacher status (QTS) with experience teaching English, at primary, middle or secondary level
- A proven ability to manage pastoral responsibilities effectively
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and parents
- A passionate and engaging teaching style that inspires students to reach their full potential in English
- Strong organisational and leadership skills, with the ability to lead and motivate others
What we offer:
- A friendly and supportive school environment with a focus on professional development
- An opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience.
- The chance to make a real impact on student’s academic and personal development
- Flexibility for applicants interested in a secondment from their current role. Any secondment would need to be arranged with the agreement and support of the candidate’s current school
The Cheviot Learning Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and a satisfactory enhanced DBS check is required for the successful candidate.
An online search will be undertaken on all shortlisted candidates.
Further details and an application form are available by accessing the job vacancies section of our website cms@cheviotlt.co.uk or by emailing s.hall@nms.cheviotlt.co.uk

Chantry Middle School
The Three Rivers Learning Trust is named after the valleys of the Wansbeck, Font and Coquet which largely define its catchment area.
The three schools in the Learning Trust are:
- Chantry Middle School
- Newminster Middle Schools
- The King Edward VI High School
The Learning Trust is managed by a single Board of Directors to ensure the integration of educational provision for students between 9 and 19.
The Learning Trust also has an alliance agreement with the Dr Thomlinson C of E Middle School in Rothbury to enable collaboration on the curriculum and continuing professional development of staff. This enables the smooth transition of students from Rothbury to KEVI.
